WHILE YOU WERE AWAY – A play by the Fall 2015 Documentary Theatre Class (RCHUM 334)

Scene #12: “Sophie’s other monologue” written by Sophie Goldberg

I’m in this class through the Prison Creative Arts Project, where we like go into prisons once a week
and conduct workshops.
Um, so I had a partner. And luckily for me she was a theatre major um cause I don’t know a ton
about theatre I like was on the stage crew in high school, that’s uh, that’s my exposure uhhh to
theater
but honestly we didn’t even need to know much about theatre.
It’s mainly just about being authentic and like just bringing yourself into a place where there’s not a
lot of happiness and there’s not a lot of… hope.
So I went to the uh, Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility every Saturday morning at 8 am.
Um and there was a woman in my workshop, Molly. Molly was the youngest of all the participants in
the workshop. probably only like 23 or 24 and um she hadn’t been in prison for that long.
She was so bright and she just kept going despite… and it was just like so hard to not identify with
her.
She told us a little bit about her background. Well, in the end she ended up like telling us her whole
story even though like we don’t ask and their not technically supposed to tell us, but like if someone
is opening up to you you don’t just tell them to stop um.
so she went to U of M Flint and like was a student at U of M when she got arrested and and um got
sent to prison and like ugh, she’s just like so smart and she’s like a natural leader like
all the other women
like listened to her
like she started taking charge in our workshops
and like suggesting activities
and like coming up with all these ideas
she was a really great writer um
but, anyway, she got sent to prison for murder
it’s so unfortunate
because like one of her friends was having a lot of trouble with this guy
she had broken up with him but he wouldn’t leave her alone
so one night they just wanted to scare him off
and um she was like bluffing like saying,
I don’t know if she was gonna shoot him,
or she was gonna stab him,
it was just to like defend her friend
and get revenge, and scare him,
but like something went wrong and he act-…. he died.
And uh she got charge with um at least second degree murder if not first degree murder.
And like she would tell us about like her sorority at at U of M Flint and like all her sorority sisters and
how her mom was like in the same sorority there too and like it can be anyone. That’s that’s the
main thing that she taught me. It can just be anyone.
