WHILE YOU WERE AWAY – A play by the Fall 2015 Documentary Theatre Class (RCHUM 334)
Scene #13: “Sydney” written by Paris La Rock
God certainly has a sense of humor I’ll tell you that.
When I heard that you wanted to do this interview about my past with incarceration I was like,
“Man I can’t believe it! Do you know in two weeks I’m going back to jail for what I did thirty years
Actually that’s why I missed your call just now.
I’m in the courthouse.
It went…it went O.K.…
They’re thinking of sending me back for eight to nine months.
I’m hoping just eight to nine months…
They said the jail is so overcrowded they can’t keep anyone for long right now.
(Laughs) All of ‘em!
They don’t have any more room for the guys in there so now they’re just putting mattresses on the
That’s it. Just draggin’ them onto the floor.
I gotta tell you though, God, he must certainly have a plan for me.
Cause I’ve been out and working for thirty years.
And just like that…
As you know I turn sixty-five in two days
Now don’t tell nobody at the shelter ‘cause I can still pass for forty-five (laughs).
You’re still gonna serve at the shelter while I’m gone, right?
Anyway, I enjoy growin’ older. Really I really do.
Cause when you’re on the outside,
You don’t even notice it’s happening.
I swear I didn’t know my hair was gray until my wife told me (laughs).
But when you’re gettin’ older,
and you’re on the inside
You sit and think about what you could’ve done
Where did your life go?
And if you’re not strong enough your emotions can terrorize you to death.
A lot of people give up on life.
But my faith is very very strong.
God does things for a reason,
And I know I’m meant to go back there to talk to some of the young guys
and help them out.
‘Cause I’ve been through it.
Oh. Um hold on…
Do you mind if I call you back tomorrow?
They’re callin’ me back in.
