WHILE YOU WERE AWAY – A play by the Fall 2015 Documentary Theatre Class (RCHUM 334)

Scene #26: “Cats and Dogs” written by Rami Kadouh

I met Sandra last week who was convicted of mail fraud along with her husband and they were
sentenced to 7 months in prison and had to split the sentence.
He served 4 months and she is serving 3 months.
Our wonderful government allowed them to serve their sentences at different times so that one
parent could be with their four children while the other was in prison.
Sandra and her husband are both chiropractors and were operating under the same state I.D.
license which caused an error in billing.
What’s the point?….
What did the government gain by taking these people away from their young children, seizing their
property, and levying some very heavy fines as well as other monetary restitution.
Well, I guess I just answered my own question. It’s about the money!
But at any rate…
Many of the other women never got any visitors, their family couldn’t afford to come.
And even then, the visitors’ room was so small that it was often packed because of the overcrowding
of inmates.
The guards, they love working in the visitor’s room because of the power they have to make family
leave if there are too many people there.
The fastest growing group in the U.S. is not cats and dogs, it is convicted felons. Euthanasia is
applied to the animal overpopulation, I can hardly wait to see what is in store for the rest of us.
