Conversations With Pictures From a Drawer

March 14, 2016 @ 8:00 am - March 26, 2016 @ 5:00 pm

Triangle Face

This exhibition stages several dialogues between current UM students and formerly incarcerated individuals about the prisoner identification photographs included in Bruce Jackson’s 2009 publication Pictures From a Drawer: Prison and the Art of Portraiture. Taken from an office drawer in Arkansas’ Cummins Penitentiary during Jackson’s documentary photography work at that facility in 1975, these photographs constitute the return of a repressed archive that compels critical engagements with the likenesses it contains, the lives it captured, and the institutions and technologies that it reflected and produced. The exhibition records these critical engagements as a dialogic project, highlighting the effects of collaborative interpretation on understandings of how, what, and whom we see in the images and texts that picture the prison and its subjects.
