Theatre in Prisons Around the World: A Lecture and Interactive Workshop

March 30, 2016 @ 6:30 am - 8:30 pm

Hexagon Face

As improbable as it may seem, theatrical activity has been taking place inside prisons around the world for almost as long as the practice of incarceration has existed. Ashley Lucas will speak about a sampling of the various kinds of theatre practice she has witnessed during her research in prisons in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. Her talk will be interspersed with demonstrations of performance games and exercises that have been used in prisons around the world.

Ashley Lucas is Associate Professor of Theatre & Drama and the Residential College at the University of Michigan where she also serves as the Director of the Prison Creative Arts Project. She is currently writing a book about theatre in prisons around the world.
