Humanize the Numbers is an exhibition of collaborative photography, completed by a group of men incarcerated at Thumb Correctional Facility (Lapeer, MI) and students at the University of Michigan. The title of the exhibition originated in the workshop at Thumb Correctional Facility, and speaks to the intention of the exhibition to confront the overwhelming numbers of mass incarceration with individual human stories through photographs. This exhibition stages several dialogues between current UM students and formerly incarcerated individuals about the prisoner identification photographs included in Bruce Jackson’s 2009 publication Pictures From a Drawer: Prison and the Art of Portraiture. Taken from an office drawer in Arkansas' Cummins Penitentiary during Jackson's documentary photography work at that facility in 1975, these photographs constitute the return of a repressed archive that compels critical engagements with the likenesses it contains, the lives it captured, and the institutions and technologies…

Janie Paul is an artist and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design. She moved to Michigan in 1995 to teach at the University of Michigan and began facilitating art workshops in prisons. She worked with Buzz Alexander to develop the Prison Creative Arts Project and in 1996 they organized the first Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners.
